Clothing has a big impact on how a family session feels in photographs, but it does not need to be complicated. The goal is coordination, comfort and movement rather than perfectly matching outfits.

Start with a soft colour palette

Neutrals, earthy greens, warm browns, creams, muted blues and gentle textures usually photograph beautifully. They keep the attention on expressions and connection rather than on strong colour contrast.

Dress for movement

Family sessions work best when children can move, cuddle, play and be carried easily. Comfortable clothing helps everyone settle faster and keeps the session natural.

Avoid too many competing patterns

One subtle pattern can work well, but several bold prints in the same frame tend to distract. Mixing solids with texture is often the easiest route to a timeless result.

Think about the location and season

Outdoor sessions around Oxford, parks and open spaces often suit layers, knitwear and softer fabrics. Indoors, lighter tones and simpler silhouettes usually keep the photographs clean and elegant.

If you are booking a session, I am always happy to help you choose outfits that will feel natural on the day and timeless in the final gallery.
